The Pains and Pleasures of Moving: Adapting to Change

By Carly Baird – Career Facilitator

Who here loves to move into a new home?! Anybody…? Well, maybe the final product, but the process itself can be a bit of a pain.

I moved recently and phew, what an adventure. All the logistics to prepare, going through stuff I haven’t used for years, making time outside of working multiple jobs to pack and clean. I was tired, grumpy, and didn’t want to look at another cardboard box. And then we got to the new place. There are still boxes in the living room, but it’s beautiful and we are creating a new space that we enjoy.

It reminds me of all the pains and possibilities of any change. Change can be uncomfortable, and takes work to adjust to. Just like moving. But, if we only remember the new and exciting possibilities that await on the other side! Without change, nothing new can occur. If only I had reminded myself, in those painful moments, about how great and exciting it will be on the other side of the move.

That is my invitation to us all. Remember the possibilities that await us on the other side of the pains of any change. The change may take work, energy, courage, whatever is needed in that moment. But if we remember through it all that there is a beautiful possibility on the other side, it can make the challenges a little easier.
